Over the past few months, I've been reading various Marvel Essential volumes (and DC's equivalent Showcase books). Some have been quite good, while others have been average; but until I picked up Essential Fantastic Four Volume 4, I had forgotten what a sheer pleasure reading the classic Stan Lee/Jack Kirby material could be.

Sometimes more is just more; in this collection, that is not the case. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby continue to improve in skill and art as they tell marvel-lous tales about space, time, genetics, and science fiction. Plus, it contains Jack Kirby's "This is a Plot?," which is a comical depiction of he and Stan at work, and a Fantastic Four Feature Fantasy starring the Silver Surfer! A must for any F.F. fan!!

It's all been said here, but when Stan Lee declared the FF "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" - he wasn't kidding. Much of the credit goes to Jack Kirby, who truly embraced and loved his characters - the Thing, Mr Fantastic, Invisible Girl and the Torch. Volumes 3 and 4 of the Essential FF series are basically Kirby in overdrive and his best. Sinnott is arguably, as some say, the best inker the FF and Kirby ever had.

Never has a title for a collected volume of work ever been more appropriate. This is truly Essential Fantastic Four. The FF was already on their way to be the World's Greatest Super Team but this block of issues cemented it. You got the Inhumans, you got the Mad Thinker, you got the Watcher, you got guest stars like the Mighty Thor, the Amazing Spider-Man and the man without fear, Daredevil.
